Nick Clegg Launches Lib Dem Campaign on Youth Unemployment

Caroline Pidgeon: "It is a scandal that youth unemployment in some parts of Lambeth is as high as 21%"
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has announced plans to tackle the challenge of youth unemployment, in the face of new figures projecting 1.2 million young people could be unemployed by the end of 2011. The plans feature a package of proposals to help young people find work and skills more quickly.
These include:
- Funding 10,000 more university places and 50,000 college-based Foundation Degree places
- Introducing a paid internship scheme, allowing young people to work for up to three months at no cost to their employer, whilst being paid a weekly training allowance of £55, helping up to 200,000 young people from less well-off backgrounds gain valuable experience, improving their skills and enhancing their CVs.
- Creating a "Green Taskforce" of over 20,000 young people to improve the energy efficiency of millions of homes and public buildings in Britain, and make lasting improvements to Britain's transport infrastructure.
The plans are fully costed and could be funded by scrapping the VAT cut immediately.
Vauxhall Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner Caroline Pigeon said "It is a scandal that youth unemployment in some parts of Lambeth is as high as 21%, and it is vital that we take action to tackle joblessness using these initiatives to build valuable skills, and helping people to get a foot in the door through paid internships."
