London's Conservative Mayor has carried out an amazing u-turn on tall buildings
London's Conservative Mayor has carried out an astonishing U-turn on tall buildings in the Vauxhall constituency.
In the last London election campaign, the then Conservative candidate Boris Johnson pledged to oppose tall buildings outside areas like the City of London and Croydon.
But on Thursday October 23rd, Boris Johnson announced that he will no longer be objecting to the proposed Elizabeth House development near Waterloo. This development will include a building over 30 storeys in height. This application has now been called in by Secretary of State, Hazel Blears.
And in another application on Wandsworth Road near Vauxhall, the Mayor did not object to the planned 35 storey development on grounds of height. This application has just been passed by Lambeth Council's planning committee.
Local Lib Dem Parliamentary campaigner Caroline Pidgeon said: "It is a complete U-turn on the part of the Mayor. As a Mayoral candidate, one of Boris Johnson's key campaign pledges was to oppose tall buildings. But he is not living up to his campaign promises."
She added: "Whatever your views on tall buildings, Boris Johnson has performed an incredible U-turn and has misinformed people in the Vauxhall and Waterloo areas over this".
