Caroline Pidgeon outside Vauxhall Street Post Office
The Post Office have announced that they want to close the Post Office at 34 Vauxhall Street, as the Government and the Post Office push ahead with their plans to close around 2,500 post offices around the country.
Clapham Common (High Street) office and 154 Acre Lane are also to be shut. Local Liberal Democrats vigorously oppose the closure of these offices which provides a vital service to local communities.
Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Caroline Pidgeon is leading the fight to oppose the Vauxhall Street Post Office closure. Here's how you can help:
Sign the petition against closing Vauxhall Street Post Office at: http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/savevauxhallst Let's send the Government a strong message that closing this post office is unnecessary and unacceptable.
Write to the national consultation team at consultation@ postoffice.co.uk. Explain how much you use Vauxhall Street post office and how difficult it will be for you to get to another branch.
When the Conservatives were in government 3,500 post offices closed, and they did nothing to save the post office network. From 1997 to 2007 under Labour another 4,000 post offices have closed - and they are doing nothing to stop a further 2,500 closures on top of that.
Our post office network has not been safe under the Tories or Labour.
In the north Lambeth area in recent years, post offices have closed in Loughborough Road, Clapham Road, South Lambeth Road and Coldharbour Lane.
But not only will this closure cause hardship and inconvenience to many people. Other local shops nearby could suffer a knock-on effect, and alternative post offices could see longer queues.
The Lib Dems are not only opposing closures - we have properly costed and planned ideas to preserve the offices - details can be viewed at www.libdems.org.uk/commerce/issues/postoffice.html
Do sign our petition to preserve the remaining post offices in our area.
