Lambeth Lib Dems are calling for climate change action
Local residents have been signing up to support a Lib Dem plan for action on climate change.
Lambeth Liberal Democrats hit the streets last Saturday with a street stall to drum up support for the party's 'Green Tax Switch' plan. The Lib Dem plan would see a cut in income tax worth £1,000 to the average family, paid for by tough new "green" taxes on things like carbon emissions.
Lambeth Lib Dem leader Councillor Ashley Lumsden said: "We were delighted to see our 'Green Tax Switch' was so popular with the Lambeth residents we spoke to.
Lib Dems want to change the way Britain is taxed. We want to tax income less and tax pollution and carbon emissions more. That way we can both cut income tax for everyone and take vital action against climate change.
While the other parties are now generating hot air over climate change, Lib Dems have a fully worked-out plan to take real action."
The Lib Dem Green Tax Switch would see the basic rate of income tax cut by 2p, the 20p tax rate abolished and thresholds increased. These changes would save the average family £1,000 a year. This would be paid for by higher taxes on energy use, large engine cars and plane fuel and by ending certain capital gains tax exemptions and higher rate tax breaks.
